Analysis of Lexical and Contextual Meaning in Westlife Album Coast to Coast

This research’s objective are (1) the lexical meaning in Westlife album Coast to Coast, and (2) contextual meaning in Westlife album Coast to Coast. The problem proposed in this final assignment based on the fact that Westlife song titled “Againts All Odds” consist of lexical meaning and contextual meaning. Lexical meaning refers to the basic meaning of the word corresponding to the dictionary. Contextual meaning refers to the meaning that appears in accordance with the context of the word is used. The data consist of 22 lyrics from the song “Againts All Odds” which were taken from Youtube and trancribed to text. Qualitative method is used to answer the problems. The results of the study stated (1) the lexical meaning in the songs are explained they are synonim (5 words), antonym (4 words), homonim (1 word), and meronym (1 word), and (2) the contextual meaning in the songs are elaborated through the context of place, 2 lyrics, and the context of situation, 5 lyrics. There are not found any context of time in the songs. The writer concludes that the lexical meaning and contextual meaning in Westlife’s songs “Against All Odds” are varied. It indicates that the function of that meaning are important to embellish the songs.
