Reading is the important aspect to be mastered in learning English especially for the students in junior high school. Unfortunately, most of the students usually have difficulties in reading because they lack of vocabularies. Teachers have to find an appropriate technique that can improve this skill. Therefore, the writer chooses scanning technique as an alternative way to improve students’ reading comprehension. The aim of this research is to find out the improvement of students’ ability in reading comprehension through scanning technique at the seventh grade students of SMPN 1 Teluknaga in academic year 2019/2020. This study used descriptive qualitative method and the data were collected by analyzing students’ score through pre-test and post-test. The result of this research shows that: (1) Students get better and faster in locating the detail information they need; (2) Scanning technique is very useful to help students save their time while doing the test; (3) Students’ ability in comprehending the text are improving. It can be seen from their score on post-test which is increasing. It can be concluded that scanning technique is an effective way to improve students’ reading comprehension especially for identifying detail information.
