Developing Students' Speaking and Listening Skills Through Modern Technology

Students need to learn English to broaden their minds, develop skills and improve their quality of life through employment opportunities. Therefore, good communication in English is needed. This research uses a qualitative method with a descriptive approach; this research plan is located at SMP Negeri 45 Jakarta; after observing and surveying this school with an English Day Program requiring students to speak English on Thursdays. This school implements an Kurikulum Merdeka in which teachers must be more creative in delivering the material. The writer uses modern technology by using smartphones as a learning tool to increase students' interest in improving speaking and listening skills. This action will produce the vocabulary needed to compose effective and efficient communication. The writer chose YouTube videos and audio as learning tools with varied methods. To determine the results of this research, the writer interviewed and conducted a pretest and post-test interview; the results showed that many students obtained improved scores after using this method. It stated that it effectively increased students' interest in learning English.
