Abstrak

Less interaction using English during lessons coupled with the fact that English is not taught in elementary schools, which makes students unfamiliar with English, resulted in a lack of vocabulary, fear of making mistakes and low self-confidence when speaking English are the main problems in this study. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of using Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) to improve students' speaking skills at SMP Negeri 27 Depok and in accordance with the new curriculum learning, namely the Merdeka Curriculum where students are required to actively speak during lessons. The CLT method significantly improves students' speaking ability as well as improving the speaking aspect. CLT is in line with the Independent Curriculum as it requires students to be active in class, with the teacher acting as a facilitator and also focusing on developing English speaking skills through daily conversations and class discussions.
