THE TRANSLATION OF IDIOMATIC EXPRESSIONS FROM ENGLISH TO INDONESIAN IN THE SUBTITLES OF THE JOKER MOVIE DIRECTED BY TODD PHILLIPS

This research focuses on the translation of idiomatic expressions from English to Indonesian in the subtitles of the Joker movie directed by Todd Phillips. The translation was carried out by Lebah Ganteng. The research adopts a qualitative descriptive method to examine and describe this translation process. The objectives of the study are to analyze the translation techniques based on Molina and Albir's theory (2002), the translation strategies employed by the translator in rendering idiomatic expressions in the movie, drawing upon Baker's theory (2018), and to assess the equivalence of this translation based on Nida's theory (1969). As the result, the researcher discovered that the translator predominantly employs the reduction translation technique. Additionally, three primary translation strategies for idioms were identified, the translator commonly utilizes two strategies: maintaining similar meaning and form, and similar meaning but dissimilar form. the remaining strategy involves translating the idiom through paraphrasing. Regarding translation equivalence, the translator predominantly adopts dynamic equivalence.
