SEMIOTIC ANALYSIS OF ROSE AND MAGIC MIRROR IN THE MOVIE BEAUTY AND THE BEAST

This research is about semiotics to analyze the meaning of denotation and connotation in the movie Beauty and the Beast. The objects of this research are the rose and magic mirror symbols in the Disney movie Beauty and the Beast (2017). This study uses a qualitative method of content analysis. The aims of this research are: (1) The theoretical function of this research is to serve as a basis and reference for subsequent studies related to the meaning of signs in semiotic theory. (2) The practical function of this analysis is to add insight to readers and writers about how to interpret a sign in a movie using semiotic theory. The results of this study are as follows: (1) The denotative meaning of roses is flowers with beautiful petals, thorny stems and fragrant aroma. The connotative meaning of roses is to symbolize love, affection, and sincerity. For the mythical meaning, red roses have become a symbol of perfect love without weakness, while white roses symbolize sincere love like the love of a father to his daughter. (2) While the denotative of magic mirror in this movie is a tool for seeing objects’ shadows. The connotative meaning of magic mirror is the mirror like a window to see the outside world, while the mythical meaning is for some stories, magic mirror are often referred to as a tool to grant wishes.
