Pragmatics study on deixis and reference in selected lyrics on meet the vamps album

This study examines the types of deixis, dominant deixis and its referent used in selected song lyrics on Meet The Vamps Album using Levinson's (1983) theory. The data obtained from the ten song lyrics entitled Cecilia, Somebody To You, Can We Dance, Wild Heart, Girls On Tv, Risk It All, Fall, Shout About It, Lovestruck, and Golden then qualified into five types of deixis. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method to analyze the pragmatics study of deixis and referent in the song lyrics the findings proved that there are five types of deixis found in the song lyrics, they are personal deixis, spatial deixis, temporal deixis, social deixis, and discourse deixis. According to the findings of this study, there are 157 deixis detected in the lyrics, which include 71 of personal deixis, 14 of temporal deixis, 23 of spatial deixis, 13 of social deixis and 36 discourse deixis. The dominant types of deixis is person deixis. The 1st person primarily referring to the singer or songwriter. The 2nd person refers to the addressee, as indicated by "you, your, and yours," whereas the 3rd person refers to something or someone who becomes the major thing or character in songs. Spatial deixis is precise place refers to the singer/songwriter's and the women's locations. Temporal deixis is adverb of time that appeared in the songs.
