The effect of discrimination on a person's mentality in the crazy rich asians movie

Abstrak

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the types of discrimination experienced by the main character in her society, and to identify the negative and positive effects against discrimination. This thesis uses descriptive qualitative methods to analyze this movie. The subject of this thesis was the type of discrimination and the negative and positive effect in Crazy Rich Asians movie. The data were obtained from various sources, such as books, journals, and articles related to the types of discrimination, negative effect of discrimination, and positive effect of discrimination. In collecting data was using the technique of watching repeatedly. The data analysis was conduct using Abigail’s theory. The results of this thesis show three important matters. First, there are seven types of discrimination experienced by Rachel Chu, that are genetic information discrimination, harassment, national origin discrimination, pregnancy discrimination, race/color discrimination, religious discrimination, and sexual harassment. Second, there are also four types of negative effects experienced by a person against discrimination, which are marginalization, disempowerment, low self-esteem and self-identity, and negative behaviors such as aggression or criminality. The result, there are three positive effects against discrimination, which are courageous, never give up, and self confident.
