Wina Gatrya (31170068), Monster and Grief Symbolism in A Monster Calls Directed by J.A Bayona

 

The purpose of this paper is to identify the meaning of two biggest symbolism in the movie, what are they similar to according to grief symbolism, and how acceptance is shown in it. This research is based on the movie A Monster Calls and directed by J.A Bayona. The data collected uses Descriptive Quantitative Method by watching and observing the film and taking scenes from it to reveal their meaning. The results of the study reveal that: (1) The monster is part of an ancient being that has lived within the story for a long time and is symbolized as a helper for the main character to cope with his loss as well as accepting the character‘s movie‘s death. (2) Through symbolism, the main character goes stages of grief through he does not progress through all of them necessarily which is normal, and the main character goes through Denial, Anger, Bargaining, and Depression. Connor faces his denial where refuses to let go of his mother in the first story and then his anger and bargaining when he lets his emotions take over him in the second story (3) The main character eventually learns how to accept his mother‘s death by the end of the movie by addressing his thoughts, vulnerability  and learning to respond properly when he lets go. The acceptance becomes an important focus towards the ending where he can finally allow his mother to leave in peace.
