Characterization of The Main Character in Matilda by Roald Dahl

This paper is written to analyse the characterization of main character and introduce the issue through literary work. That is why the writer chose Matilda by Roald Dahl. This research used Burroway’s theory of characterization to identify the most dominant behaviour of the main character. The characterization was taken by speech, thought, effect in others, action and looks to find the result. The writer uses descriptive qualitative method in writing this paper. The writer will also describe the characterization found in the novel in descriptive details, including the source page where the evident was found. Through the data provided in this paper, the result of this research is that Matilda has different behaviour with her family even she lived with them. The most showed character is high intelligence taken from her speech. Innocence, curious, and realistic are showed in her thought. In the term of effect in others, she is kind and determinate. From her action, Matilda is a brave girl and she can do psychokinesis. The last term of look, she is small and beautiful. With literary work that is popular like novel, especially one that is written by famous author such as Roald Dahl, it can help people to learn characterization of children literature in a fun and effective way.
