Karina Andjani (31170198), CODE SWITCHING IN THE CALLING NOVEL BY ASRINI MAHDIA & RINA SURYAKUSUMA.

 

One of the language phenomena that the writer encounters a lot these days is code switching. Code switching, or a switch from one language to another one while talking, is usually used by the bilingual and multilingual society. The objectives of this research are to find out the types of code switching and the reasons behind them being used by the characters in the novel. The writer uses descriptive qualitative on conducting this research. Books and theories of experts on Sociolinguistics are used as the frame of the study. The source of data is obtained by reading the whole content of the novel, focusing on the utterances and dialogues by the characters. When all is done, the writer finally knows that from 4 types of code switching, inter-sentential switching is the most used type. The writer too finds out that of all reasons, the most common one behind the use of code switching is for the intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor.

Salah satu femonena bahasa yang seringkali ditemukan oleh penulis belakangan ini adalah code switching. Code switching, atau pergantian dari satu bahasa ke bahasa lain ketika sedang berbicara, biasanya digunakan oleh masyarakat bilingual atau multilingual. Tujuan dari penilitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui tipe-tipe code switching dan alasan dibalik penggunaan code switching oleh karakter-karakter di dalam novel. Penulis menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif dalam membuat penelitian ini. Buku dan teori para ahli Sosiolinguistik digunakan oleh penulis sebagai kerangka studi. Sumber data didapatkan dengan cara membaca keseluruhan isi novel, menaruh perhatian atau fokus pada ucapan dan dialog karakter-karakter. Ketika semuanya telah selesai dilakukan, penulis akhirnya mengetahui bahwa dari 4 tipe code switching yang ada, tipe yang paling sering digunakan oleh karakter di dalam novel ini adalah inter-sentential switching. Penulis juga mendapat kesimpulan bahwa dari sekian banyak alasan yang ada, alasan paling umum atas penggunaan code switching adalah untuk mengklarifikasi isi percakapan untuk lawan bicara.
