Representation Of Trauma From Joker Movie (2019)

This research discusses the representation of trauma in the main character of Todd Phillips' Joker
(2019) using Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic approach. The movie tells the transformation of Arthur Fleck, a
man with mental disorders, depression, identity crisis, and social pressure that leads to a personality shift into
the iconic Joker figure. This research aims to analyze how childhood trauma, physical and emotional abuse, and
social rejection shape Arthur's destructive behavior. The method used is qualitative with film text analysis
through dialog, visual symbols, and character development. The results show that unresolved trauma, deep
depression, a failed search for identity, and continuous social pressure affect the dominance of id over Arthur's
ego and superego, which ultimately triggers criminal acts as a form of release and search for self recognition.
This study is expected to contribute to the study of film psychology and expand the understanding of the
representation of complex psychological conditions through works of cinema.
