Abstrak

Language is one of the most important social tools that reflect both communication and identity. This research aims to identify the types of language styles used in the movie Bad Boys: Ride or Die (2024), analyze the social factors influencing their use, and explain how language styles contribute to the representation of social status among characters. The study applies Martin Joos’s (1976) theory of language style—frozen, formal, consultative, casual, and intimate—and Holmes’s (1992) sociolinguistic framework on social factors. A descriptive qualitative method was used, with data obtained from dialogues in the movie. The findings show that five types of language styles appear throughout the movie: frozen (1 datum), formal (11 data), consultative (9 data), casual (39 data), and intimate (14 data). The most dominant type is the casual style, reflecting informal and friendly interactions between the main characters. The choice of language style is influenced by participants’ relationships, setting, and level of social authority. The study concludes that language style not only functions as a medium of communication but also as a means of representing social hierarchy, intimacy, and power among the characters.
