CODE MIXING IN MAUDY AYUNDA'S PODCAST: A SOCIOLINGUISTIC STUDY

In Indonesia’s digital media environment, bilingual speakers frequently combine Indonesian and English, particularly in conversational formats such as YouTube talk shows. This study investigates code-mixing in the YouTube talk-show episode “Dating Tips: Jangan Dikit-Dikit Putus” featuring Maudy Ayunda, Jovial da Lopez, and Kezia Aletheia, with a focus on insertional code-mixing from a sociolinguistic perspective. Using a qualitative descriptive method, this research analyzes a verbatim transcript of the episode based on Muysken’s (2000) code-mixing typology—insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization—and applies sociolinguistic frameworks related to identity, interaction, and audience alignment. Data were collected through documentation and observation and analyzed using the Miles–Huberman–Saldaña interactive model. The findings reveal 31 instances of code-mixing, with insertion as the dominant type (58%, 18 utterances), followed by alternation (23%, 7 utterances) and congruent lexicalization (19%, 6 utterances). Linguistically, insertion appears as English lexical items and phrases embedded within Indonesian sentence structures, with Indonesian functioning as the matrix language. Sociolinguistically, insertional code-mixing is influenced by identity expression, solidarity building, and audience alignment. The study concludes that insertional code-mixing functions as a deliberate sociolinguistic strategy reflecting speakers’ pragmatic awareness, social positioning, and cultural hybridity in Indonesia’s digital discourse.
