This study examines Angel's progression from traumatic experiences to self
acceptance in the film Redeeming Love. The analysis centers on the effects of
childhood trauma, specifically the loss of a maternal figure and sexual exploitation,
on the development of Angel's identity and psychological growth as the female
protagonist. A qualitative descriptive method is employed, utilizing a literary
psychology approach.The research utilizes primary data from the film Redeeming
Love and secondary data from books, scientific journals, and articles pertinent to
trauma and self-acceptance theories. The analysis involves detailed examination of
scenes, dialogues, and Angel's characterization, grounded in Judith Herman's
trauma theory and Carl Rogers' concept of self-acceptance.The study demonstrates
that Angel's childhood trauma evolved into complex trauma, which contributed to
her negative self-perception, difficulty in trusting interpersonal relationships, and
rejection of love and acceptance. Her existence within an exploitative environment
further reinforced her victim identity and impeded psychological recovery.
Nevertheless, the presence of safe relationships and unconditional acceptance
enabled Angel to gradually reconstruct her identity and attain self-acceptance. The
film portrays this process as a non-linear journey characterized by significant inner
conflict.The study concludes that the film Redeeming Love provides a realistic
depiction of the trauma recovery process in women, highlighting that self
acceptance emerges from an extended internal process shaped by supportive
relational experiences.
