Abstrak

Adaptation is a compelling field in literary studies, serving not only as a means to transform stories across genres and media, but also to convey an author's message to new audiences. Video games offer a unique case in adaptation studies, as they are required not only to retell a story but also to recontextualize it through interactive gameplay. This research examines the adaptation of Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights in the video game Limbus Company, specifically in Canto VI, focusing on the reimagined version of Heathcliff as the main antagonist, Erlking Heathcliff. The study aims to identify which aspects of Heathcliff’s character were adapted, altered, or omitted in his game counterpart. Employing a comparative literature approach grounded in Linda Hutcheon’s theory of adaptation, this research conducts a textual and character-based analysis of both the original novel and the game. The findings reveal that while several psychological and thematic elements of Heathcliff are preserved, he is also repositioned within a new moral and narrative framework. The study concludes that his adaptation into Erlking Heathcliff transforms not only his story, but also his narrative function, thematic role, and audience reception..
