An Analysis of Academic Adaptation in Using English through the IISMA Program

The purpose of this study is to analyze the academic adaptation in using the English language that the writer experienced while participating in the Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards (IISMA) 2023 program at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. This study uses a qualitative research method with a narrative inquiry approach. The data is based on the writer's personal experience, documentation, and weekly reports. The result of this analysis is that the academic challenges she experienced were the difference in the activeness of speaking English compared to her study at Universitas Bina Sarana Informatika, understanding different English accents and mixed languages used by the local and international students at UKM, and differences in learning methods. The writer faced these challenges in the Social Media in Language Learning, Introduction to Intercultural Communication, and Teaching of Reading Skills in an ESL Context courses. On the contrary, the Shadowing Technique in English course did not give any significant struggle to the writer, and it improved her English pronunciation. The challenges were overcome by adopting appropriate academic adaptation influenced by motivation to study, English language proficiency, acculturation strategies, and social support resources.
