This research analyzes selected songs from Olivia Rodrigo’s GUTS album "Making The Bed," "The Grudge," "Teenage Dream," "Get Him Back," and "Pretty Isn't Pretty" to explore how figurative language conveys emotional expression. Many listeners may not fully understand the meaning behind figurative expressions, which can affect their emotional connection to the lyrics. The research aims to understand how five types of figurative language, metaphor, simile, hyperbole, personification, and symbolism, are used to express complex emotions such as grief, anger, anxiety, insecurity, and loneliness. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method, supported by Robert Plutchik’s Wheel of Emotions as a framework for emotional analysis. A total of twenty one figurative expressions were identified, with grief/trauma (23.8%) and insecurity/self-doubt (23.8%) as the most dominant emotions, followed by detachment/emptiness (19%), anger (14.3%), loneliness (9.5%), and existential anxiety (4.8%). The most frequently used figurative tools are symbolism and metaphor, showing their effectiveness in enhancing emotional depth in song lyrics.
