Social Awareness Values of Kim Namjoon's Speech in The United Nations as a K-pop Global Group

The global phenomenon of popular culture plays an important role in shaping the values and perspective of the young generation. One example is Kim Namjoon’s speech at the United Nations in 2018, which encouraged young people to accept themselves and dare to voice their opinions. This study aims to examine the values of social awareness contained in the speech. This study employs Critical Discourse Analysis using Norman Fairclough’s framework, which includes text analysis, discursive practices, and social practices. The method applied is qualitative descriptive. The results show that Kim Namjoon’s speech blends personal experiences with universal messages, thereby creating an emotional connection with the audience. The choice of words, storytelling style, and persuasive delivery effectively convey the values of solidarity, tolerance, and social responsibility. This study demonstrates that popular cultural figures can play a role in enhancing social awareness and inspiring the younger generation to bring about positive change.
