Abstrak

This study analyzes the types and communicative functions of American slang in the dialogue of the main character, Malcolm, in the film Dope (2015). By applying Allan and Burridge's (2006) theoretical framework through qualitative methods, this study identifies 148 examples of slang from Malcolm's conversations. The data were categorized into four of the five types of slang according to the theory: Fresh and Creative (35.13%), Flippant (31.08%), Imitative (22.29%), and Clipping (11.48%). These slang terms function to build solidarity, express emotions (such as anger), insult, initiate casual conversation, create intimacy, and convey impressions. The findings show that linguistic creativity (Fresh and Creative) and a casual or cynical attitude (Flippant) dominate Malcolm's conversations, reflecting his identity as an urban teenager and reinforcing the film's narrative reality. This study concludes that slang plays an important role in character development, strengthening the socio-cultural setting, and fulfilling pragmatic communication functions in film discourse.
