Elphaba's Psychological Personality: Stigma and Self-Concept in The Film Wicked

Stigma in personality is a significant issue affecting individuals who are considered unusual, which can impact the development of self-concept and personality in the film The Wicked. This study aims to analyze the influence of stigma experienced by Elphaba’s character on her self-concept and her personality in interactions with other characters in the film. This study uses a descriptive qualitative research method using stigma theory by Erving Goffman and self-concept theory by Carl Rogers. Data was collected by watching the film repeatedly to identify key scenes related to the research theme, as well as recording dialogue and scene descriptions. The result of this study shows that stigma experienced by Elphaba greatly influenced the development of her self-concept and personality. The stigma creates a misalignment between her self-image and her ideal self, which impacts the way she sees herself. In dealing with stigma, Elphaba goes through a long journey to manage her self-concept: from relying on the expectations of others to finally learning to accept, express, and love herself without relying on the judgment of others. And Elphaba's personality as experienced through the Big Five theory This study reveals the importance of raising social awareness about the impact of stigma and creating a good environment for those who are different. This study is expected to provide a deeper understanding of the issue of personality psychology, stigma and self-concept.
