CODE-MIXING USAGE IN INTERNATIONAL SERVER-BASED ONLINE GAME VALORANT

Abstrak

This study looks into the code-mixing usage in international server-based online game Valorant among Indonesian players, with a special emphasis on the use of code-mixing. With the growing popularity of online multiplayer games and their dependency on real-time communication, Valorant has emerged as a dynamic platform for language exposure and involvement. Drawing on Muysken’s (2000) typology of code-mixing, this research explores how informal, authentic communication in English-dominated gaming spaces influences players’ fluency, vocabulary acquisition, and pragmatic competence. adopting descriptive qualitative approach, by analyzing how and why players switch between languages. This study contributes to the broader discourse on digital game-based language learning and bilingual language use in virtual spaces. The findings reveal there are 3 types of Code-mixing Patterns That Emerge Among Players During In-game Communication, another finding reveal that English Usage and Communication in Valorant Gameplay. The study concludes that regular participation in international gaming platforms like Valorant provides learners with valuable opportunities for incidental language learning.
