Psychological Response Towards Trauma Behavior on the main Character in All Quite on The Western Front

This research aims to identify and categorize the types of trauma experienced by
characters in All Quiet on the Western Front through close textual analysis. Using
Friedman’s framework and a qualitative descriptive method, the analysis focuses on
how trauma manifests within the narrative and addresses the core research questions.
The study specifically examines the psychological deterioration of the main character,
Paul Bäumer, as a result of his exposure to the horrors of war, leading to profound
changes in his behavior and personality. The findings reveal four primary trauma types
as defined in the DSM-5 and Friedman’s theory: intrusive thoughts or memories,
avoidance behaviors, negative alterations in cognition and mood, and hyperarousal.
Once an idealistic and eager young soldier, Paul gradually becomes emotionally numb,
withdrawn, and burdened by guilt and despair. His psychological trauma not only
impacts his internal state but also disrupts his relationships, creating emotional
distance and disconnection from others. These findings emphasize how prolonged
exposure to violence and loss in wartime can severely damage an individual’s psyche,
behavior, and capacity for human connection. Ultimately, this study demonstrates the
significance of psychoanalytic theory in understanding trauma both in the context of
war and in broader psychological experiences.
