IMPOLITENESS STRATEGIES BASED ON CULPEPER’S MODEL: A DISCOURSE ANALYSIS OF A MAN CALLED OTTO

This study examines the impoliteness strategies used by Otto, the main character in the movie A Man Called Otto, based on Culpeper’s model. The objectives are to identify the types of impoliteness strategies, determine the most frequently used strategy, and investigate their functions. Subsequently, the study examined 155 occurrences of Otto’s speech containing impoliteness using a qualitative method of discourse analysis. The findings revealed: (1) three types of impoliteness strategies used by Otto, such as positive impoliteness, negative impoliteness, and withhold politeness; (2) positive impoliteness was the strategy most frequently used, followed by negative impoliteness and withhold politeness; and (3) two functions of impoliteness strategies were found, namely affective impoliteness and coercive impoliteness. These findings enhance understanding of the impoliteness strategies and functions used in speech, contributing to the promotion of a respectful communication environment and serving as a foundation for future research.
