THE CONSTRUCTION OF MASCULINITY IN HACKSAW RIDGE BY MEL GIBSON

The purpose of this research is to understanding the pattern and portrayal of masculinity in the movie used by Desmond, the main character in the movie Hacksaw Ridge. The writer used qualitative descriptive method to analyze it. Beside that, the writer is using the concept of masculinity by Connell’s framework as the basic theory. The writer collects the data by framing and picturing the data either from the actions or the dialogues. The findings revealed: (1) three pattern hegemonic masculinity used by Desmond, such as hegemonic masculinity, subordinated masculinity, marginalized masculinity; (2) the hegemonic masculinity of the main character in the movie Hacksaw Ridge. Hegemonic masculinity in the Hacksaw Ridge film is carried out by Desmond in four scenes, namely Desmond's childhood, training at a military camp, while in prison and preparations for war. this analysis aims to delve into the intricate and multifaceted portrayal of masculinity in the film. contributing to the promotion of a respectful communication environment and serving as a foundation for future research.
