BREAKDOWN THE LYRICS OF COLDPLAY SELECTED SONGS: A SEMANTICS STUDY

Semantics is the study of how form and meaning are related. Semantics
concerned with both the literal meaning of words and the meaning of the way they are
combined, which taken together form the core of meaning, or starting point from
which, the whole meaning of a particular utterance is construct. The aim of this study
focuses on literal meaning and nonliteral meaning of the lyrics of Coldplay songs, the
selected songs, namely, “Up & up”, “Yellow”, and “Everglow.” This study can help
the Coldplay’s listeners about the meaning of the songs. This study uses descriptive
qualitative methods, and theory of semantics by Kreidler is applied in analyzing the
meanings of the selected Coldplay lyrics. The result of this study are as follows: (1)
the lyrics in Coldplay selected songs used literal meaning in several lines; (2) there are
nonliterally meaning; and (3) there are some messages from these songs
