This thesis analyzes the denotative and connotative meanings in the lyrics of Just the
Way You Are by Bruno Mars using lexical semantics theory. The research focuses on
three main questions: (1) What are the denotative meanings found in the lyrics? (2)
What connotative meanings can be interpreted in the lyrics? (3) How do these
meanings contribute to the romantic and expressive tone of the song? Using a
qualitative descriptive method, 16 lyric lines were examined. Denotative meanings
show the literal interpretation of the words, while connotative meanings reveal
emotional, social, and figurative associations. The findings show that the song uses
strong affective and evaluative connotations to express deep admiration, sincerity, and
emotional value. These meanings enhance the romantic tone and emotional message
of the song. This study shows how language in song lyrics can communicate both
direct and deeper, implied meanings. The analysis helps readers understand how
meaning is shaped by context and emotion in popular music.
