Semantics Analysis of Figurative Language in Saviors Album by Green Day

This study aims to investigate the use of figurative language in selected songs from Green Day's Saviors album. The aim is to find out what types of figurative language are in the songs and how figurative language is used to convey messages and strengthen the themes of the songs from the album. Using a qualitative descriptive method, this study focuses on two songs, namely Saviors and Coma City. A total of 13 figurative language data were identified. In detail, there are three metaphors, three similes, and three ironies. In addition, two symbolisms, one personification, and one paradox were also found. Connotative meaning is also used to reveal the hidden meaning, message and theme of the song. The findings of the study indicate that the use of figurative language in song lyrics plays a role in building the atmosphere, meaning, and emotion in the song lyrics. Connotative elements help to explore the meaning more deeply, which enriches the interpretation of the songs. The album as a whole communicates the theme of social criticism of the reality of the modern world, which is filled with chaos, alienation and hope. This study concludes that figurative language can help singers convey messages and themes of songs more strongly and distinctively.
