Abstrak

This study examines the film The Intern (2015) directed by Nancy Meyers through the
combined application of Boggs and Petrie’s (2008) theory of characterization and
Kingstone’s (2021) intergenerational theory. The research aims to identify how the
characters of Ben Whittaker and Jules Ostin are presented, determine their most
notable characteristics, and explore the shared values between them. Using a
qualitative descriptive approach, the analysis focuses on specific scenes, dialogues,
and narrative structures that highlight their generational identities and interpersonal
dynamics.
The findings reveal that Ben is characterized as calm, empathetic, and dependable,
while Jules is portrayed as ambitious, driven, and gradually open to trust and
collaboration. Despite their generational differences, both characters share values of
respect, integrity, and adaptability, enabling them to bridge the gap between their
respective age groups. The integration of characterization theory and intergenerational
theory provided a comprehensive framework for analyzing how the film constructs
and develops these personalities. This study concludes that The Intern serves as a
relevant cultural text for understanding intergenerational relationships and offers
practical implications for fostering collaboration in diverse professional environments.
