PSYCHOLOGICAL PROBLEMS OF THE CHARACTERS TOWARDS EUTHANASIA IN ME BEFORE YOU FILM DIRECTED BY THEA SHARROCK

- 2025
Grief and suffering are central to the psychological response following major life changes, particularly those involving physical limitations and loss of autonomy. This study explores the psychological problems experienced by the main characters in Me Before You (2016), directed by Thea Sharrock, focusing on Will Traynor's emotional and psychological conflict in choosing euthanasia after becoming quadriplegic. Using a descriptive qualitative method, this research applies Elisabeth Kübler-Ross’s Five Stages of Grief, denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance, and Viktor Frankl’s Logotherapy to understand the characters' inner experiences and decisions. The findings reveal that Will's journey reflects the complete stages of grief, along with a profound psychological crisis marked by the loss of purpose, identity, and meaning. Despite receiving love and support, he remains emotionally detached and chooses assisted suicide to reclaim control and dignity. Louisa Clark, in contrast, undergoes psychological growth by confronting emotional pain and finding meaning through her relationship with Will. This research emphasizes how euthanasia is portrayed not merely as a medical issue but as a deeply personal, ethical, and psychological choice. The study contributes to understanding how film can represent complex emotional experiences and provoke reflection on autonomy, compassion, and the value of life.
