Abstract
This research examines how All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven portrays themes of mental illness, grief, and adolescent identity, focusing on Theodore Finch as a representation of bipolar disorder and suicidal thoughts. Using qualitative literary analysis, the novel is interpreted both as a narrative and as a psychological case study, showing how literary devices like metaphor, symbolism, and personification express unspoken emotional struggles. The discussion highlights Finch’s tendency to isolate himself, his euphoric highs, and his depressive lows, which reflect clinical symptoms while also carrying a sense of poetic realism. Violet’s relationship with Finch is explored through concepts such as co-rumination, caregiver mirroring, and unresolved trauma, illustrating how love functions simultaneously as comfort and as a trigger. The Wandering Project is analyzed as a form of meaning-making, where each “bright place” symbolizes both temporary hope and the shadow of loss. The novel’s title itself is shown to be both ironic and tragic, capturing Finch’s inner conflict and eventual disappearance. Drawing on psychological research and trauma-informed narrative theory, this study emphasizes the importance of literary works that represent youth mental health without romanticizing or minimizing its complexity.
