Reimagining Female Empowerment: Representation and Character Development in Charlie’s Angels
- ROSMAULIANA
- 2025
The study aims to analyze how the film Charlie’s Angels (2019) by director Elizabeth Banks reinterprets the concept of women's empowerment through the portrayal and development of its main female characters. The study uses a qualitative research method with a content analysis approach. It looks at the film's story, dialogue, and character arcs. The main way to look at how each character's maturation mirrors larger feminist ideas is through Elizabeth Hurlock's Personality Development Theory. The results show that the movie shows women's empowerment not only via physical strength and professional ability, but also through emotional strength, self-actualization, and personal agency. The Angels all change a lot as characters, which goes against the usual gender stereotypes in action movies. Their experiences show that being an empowered woman means having freedom, working with others, being smart, and being a leader. The movie also pushes ideas of solidarity, identity, and standing up to patriarchal standards. It tells a modern feminist story in a mainstream movie setting. Charlie’s Angels (2019) adds to the ongoing conversation about how women are portrayed in popular culture and gives current audiences a diverse and uplifting example of female heroes.
