This study examines the portrayal of attachment anxiety in Janet Planet (2023) through the character of Lacy, an eleven-year-old navigating her complex relationship with her mother. The research aims to analyze the representation of attachment anxiety in Lacy, identify the defense mechanisms she employs, and explore Janet’s parenting behaviors that contribute to its development. Employing a qualitative approach, the analysis is conducted through repeated viewings of the film, close examination of emotionally charged scenes, and interpretation using attachment theory. The findings reveal that Lacy’s attachment anxiety reflects the dimensions, including fear of abandonment, hyperactivating emotional regulation, heightened sensitivity to relational threats, and emotion-focused coping. Additionally, informed by Freud’s theory, Lacy demonstrates repression, denial, and sublimation as defense mechanisms. Janet’s parenting behaviors are further analyzed using Siu Mui Chan’s framework, showing elements of authoritarian and uninvolved parenting styles as key contributors to Lacy’s psychological struggles. Ultimately, the film highlights how inconsistent caregiving and emotional unavailability significantly shape a child’s sense of security and emotional development.
