Abstrak

This study entitled The Representation of Trauma in Hanya Yanagihara’s Novel A Little Life aims to analyze how trauma is portrayed through the character of Jude St. Francis. The research addresses the following questions: how trauma is represented through Jude’s character development, what types of trauma he experiences, and how trauma affects his identity and relationships. The findings reveal that Jude experiences multiple, overlapping types of trauma such as acute, chronic, complex, interpersonal, systemic, and medical which shape his psychological state, social connections, and self-perception. Trauma is not only depicted as a memory of past suffering but as a continuous, identity-shaping force. This study applies a qualitative descriptive approach through close reading and narrative analysis to explore these aspects. The analysis demonstrates that the novel’s non-linear and fragmented narrative structure effectively reflects the psychological disorientation caused by trauma, allowing readers to engage more deeply with the protagonist’s internal experience. The study contributes to contemporary literary scholarship by offering insight into trauma’s representation in fiction and its function in the construction of character and narrative form.
