Abstrak

The objectives of this study are to identify the types of reiteration and collocation and also to describe the function of reiteration and collocation used in the song lyrics of James Arthur’s "Back from the Edge" album by using Halliday and Hasan (1976) theory of lexical cohesion. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method to analyze the reiteration and collocation in the song lyrics. Based on the results of the research on reiteration and collocation, the writer found all of the types of reiteration and collocation in James Arthur’s song lyrics in ‘Back from the Edge’ album. The writer found four types of reiteration and collocation in the ten songs, namely: (a) reiteration (41 data of repetition), (9 data of synonym), (5 data of superordinate), (6 data of general word) and (b) 7 data of collocation. From these results, it is known that reiteration is the most common data type, namely 61 data from ten songs used in this study. Therefore, the function of reiteration and collocation in the lyrics of James Arthur’s song is to emphasize ideas, to convey a message by using two words that have concepts related to one another and make the song delivered clearly.
