Figurative language in music of spheres album by coldplay

Figurative language is a style of language that is a way to express the meaning of something that is different from the literal meaning of the word. Figurative language is a type of language that departs from language that uses traditional literal ways to describe people or objects. This study aims to identify and analyze the figurative language contained in Coldplay's "Music Of The Spheres" album which consists of 12 songs, but 5 of the 12 songs cannot be analyzed because there are no lyrics available, the song only consists of instruments. Of the 12 songs analyzed, 7 of them are Higher Power, Humankind, Let Somebody Go, People of the pride, My universe, Biutyful, Coloratura. This research uses descriptive qualitative method. In analyzing figurative language, this research uses the theory of Knickerbocker and Reninger (1963). There are several figurative languages that commonly appear in literary works according to Knickerbocker and Reninger (1963) in (Puspitorini & Hamdani, 2021). Researchers found types of figurative language in the song lyrics in Coldplay's Music Of Spheres album based on figurative language theory, the data displayed in the table are: 21 metaphor data (53%), 4 hyperbole data (10%), 6 simile data (15%), 5 personification data (13%), 1 symbol data (3%), and 3 synecdoke data (8%). Based on these data, the researcher concludes that the majority of figurative language types in the Music Of Spheres album is metaphor.
