Overfishing can lead to the depletion of target and non-target species, trigger indirect effects on marine populations and communities, and alter the structure and function of marine ecosystems. This has become a controversial issue for many parties. This research aims to find out the portrayal of controversy, the environmental impact, and the prevention of overfishing contained in the documentary film Seaspiracy. This research uses a qualitative description method from a semiotic perspective. Semiotics is a science that examines signs. In interpreting signs, the researcher uses Charles Sanders Pierce's semiotic analysis, this analysis is used to examine the documentary entitled "Seaspiracy" which contains the controversial issue of overfishing. This model is famous for its triangle of meaning, namely the sign, object, and interpretant. The result of this research is that there are elements of a sign portraying the controversy of overfishing, namely: Bycatch, the Fishing Industry, the Statement: "Stop Eating Marine Animals”, and Marine Stewards Council (MSC) certification. There are signs of the environmental impact of overfishing, namely: Plastic Pollution and Coral Reef Damage. Then the sign elements of overfishing prevention are: Stop Subsidies for Industrial Fishing and Fish Farming.
