Abstrak

Social class disparities refer to the unequal distribution of resources and opportunities
within a society, often perpetuated by institutional and systemic mechanisms. Using
Douglas S. Massey's theory of social stratification, this research explores two main
questions in the film The Hunger Games: How does the film visually and narratively
represent the social disparities of the main character and how does the film visually
represent the social struggle of the main character. A detailed analysis of selected
scenes reveals the stark contrast between the impoverished District 12 and the opulent
Capitol, highlighting the systemic exploitation and control by the Capitol. The visual
and narrative elements emphasize Katniss’s daily struggles for survival, her forced
participation in the Hunger Games, and her navigation of the Capitol’s superficial and
manipulative environment. These experiences support Massey's argument that social
class disparities are maintained through institutional and systemic mechanisms. The
findings show that Katniss's journey powerfully depicts economic and social struggles,
reflecting broader societal issues of inequality and oppression. In conclusion, The
Hunger Games serves as a compelling narrative that illustrates the pervasive nature of
social class disparities, aligning with Massey’s theoretical framework.
