Illocutionary Act in The Main Character Utterances in 'Emma" Movie

This study aims to find the types of illocutionary acts that exist in the utterances delivered by the main character in the film ‘Emma’, determine the most dominant types of illocutionary acts that are often used by the main character in the film 'Emma’ and to find out the function of illocutionary acts in the utterances delivered by the main character in the film 'Emma'. This research uses a qualitative method. This research resulted in 69 utterances which are illocutionary acts found in the main character utterances in the film 'Emma'. Researchers classified the 69 data based on Searle's theory classification, namely Representative, Declarative, Directive, Expressive and Commissive. The Researcher found 69 data which were divided into several types of illocutionary acts found, namely Representatives with 39 data (56.52%), Commissive with 13 data (18.84%), Directives with 12 data (17.40%), Expressive with 5 data (7.24 %), and declarative with 0 data (0%). Of the five types of illocutionary acts, researcher did not find any data that was declarative. From the results of this research, the researcher concluded that the most dominant type of illocutionary act in this research was Representatives with 39 data (56.52%) with the lowest illocutionary act being Declarative with 0 data (0%). This research can also be concluded that basically Emma's character more often conveys her own beliefs or information about something compared to the other types of illocutionary act. The research concluded that Emma more often stated what She believes even is true or false and several statements of assertions, facts, conclusions, descriptions. The functions of the illocutionary acts uttered by the main character of the film Emma are Competitive, Convivial, Collaborative and Conflictive. This function allows Emma to be able to create harmonious social relations and maintain good relationships as well as how effective communication is delivered and well received by both parties.
