Metaphor in Bruno Mars’s Song on Sociolinguistics

The research aims to analyze the use of metaphor in Bruno Mars' songs from a sociolinguistic perspective. The study identifies and categorizes the metaphors used in songs from a sociolinguistic perspective, such as "Just the Way You Are," "Talking to the Moon," "Grenade," and "Locked Out of Heaven." The method used in the research is descriptive qualitative, which collects data from the texts of the songs and then analyzes them to see how the metaphors convey a sociolinguistic perspective. The metaphors found in the songs are ontological, structural, and conventional types to explore how they convey themes and emotions. Thirty-one metaphors were identified across these songs, revealing their prevalence and diversity in enhancing lyrical depth and emotional resonance. In "Just the Way You Are," "Talking to the Moon," "Grenade," and "Locked Out of Heaven" collectively feature 31 branches of sociolinguistics, categorized into four types: Style, register and genres, Language and politeness, Language and gender, and Ethnographic sociolinguistics. Specifically, "Just the Way You Are" includes 3 instances of Style, register and genres, 4 Language and politeness examples, and 2 Language and gender instances. "Talking to the Moon" explores 5 examples of Style, register, and genres, as well as Ethnographic sociolinguistics. "Grenade" highlights 4 instances of Style, register, and genres, and 6 Language and politeness examples. Finally, "Locked Out of Heaven" features 4 examples of Style, register and genres, and 1 Language and gender instance.
