Abstrak

This research is conducted to study the English language and also to understand the meaning of One Direction's songs. Figurative language is a language that cannot be described but has meaning or significance. This research focuses on the metaphorical language used in One Direction's songs "Steal My Girl", "Story of My Life”, and “Drag Me Down”. The metaphorical concepts used are based on Lakoff and Johnson (2008), which consist of three types: structural, orientational, and ontological metaphors. This research applies a qualitative method to identify the types of figurative language and to process the data to answer the research questions. The steps in data collection include categorizing One Direction's song lyrics based on the three metaphorical concepts. There are 7 stanzas of structural metaphor lyrics, 4 stanzas of orientational metaphor, and 3 stanzas of ontological metaphor. The result of this research is that structural metaphors are more dominant in One Direction's songs.
