Lexical and Contextual Meaning in Happier Than Ever Album by Billie Eilish

Abstrak

The purposes of the analysis are to identify lexical and contextual meaning of music lyrics and discussed the most dominant between lexical and contextual meaning in the album Happier Than Ever by Billie Eilish. The source data for this analysis is Billie Eilish’s album Happier Than Ever. The data for this study are taking from the lyrics of the album and the theory of lexical and contextual meaning. The method used for this study is descriptive qualitative method. The writer selects five songs from Billie Eilish’s Happier Than Ever album: Getting Older, I Didn't Change My Number, Billie Bossa Nova, My Future, Not My Responsibility. This study used Parera’s and Chaer’s contextual and lexical meaning theories. The results of this study shows that: 1) There are 16 lexical meaning found in the lyrics consist of two types: Synonym, Polysemy. 2) There are 28 contextual meaning consist of four types, those are: Context of Mood, Situational Context, Time Context, Context of Purpose. 3) The dominant between lexical and contextual meaning in the lyrics is contextual meaning.
