Symbolism in William Blake Poetry Based on Biographical Perspective

Abstrak

This research aims to identify and understand the symbols used in five (5) William Blake poems, namely: A Poison Tree, The Tyger, The Angel, London, and The Little Boy Lost. Apart from that, this research also tries to investigate the dominant meaning of these symbols and connect the symbols with the poet's personal life and experiences. This research uses a descriptive method. The results of the research show that the poem "A Poison Tree" contains universal symbols, the poem "The Tyger" contains context-based symbols, the poem "The Angel" contains universal symbols, the poem "London" contains universal symbols, and the poem "The Little Boy Lost” contains a universal symbol. Of William Blake's five poems, the dominant symbols that are often used are universal symbols related to religious themes found in the poems The Angel, The Tyger, The Little Boy Lost. The symbols found in Blake's poetry show his connection to his personal experiences and religious beliefs. These poems also show his view of life and his criticism of society at that time.
