This study examines the semantic and pragmatic interpretations of symbolism in Mili’s songs "World.execute(me);", "World.search(you);", and "Sustain++;" using a descriptive qualitative method and content analysis. Music, as both an auditory art form and a linguistic expression, conveys layered meanings that reflect societal values and emotional states. Mili, a Japanese indie band, exemplifies this complexity with lyrics rich in symbolism, drawn from mythology, literature, and personal reflection. This research identifies five types of symbolism—metaphorical, personal, contextual, universal, and archetypal—while excluding cultural symbolism. Metaphorical symbolism is most prevalent, with 8 occurrences in "World.execute(me);", 5 in "World.search(you);", and 7 in "Sustain++;." Personal symbolism appears 2 times in both "World.execute(me);" and "World.search(you);," while contextual, universal, and archetypal symbolism feature in "World.search(you);" and "Sustain++;." Semantic analysis reveals literal meanings, while pragmatic analysis uncovers contextual and interpersonal nuances, aligning with theories by Yule (1996) and Verschueren (1987). These findings highlight how Mili’s lyrics enrich explorations of themes like love, identity, and resilience, reflecting contemporary emotional and societal experiences. By investigating symbolism through linguistic frameworks, this study sheds light on how Mili’s lyrics create emotional resonance and intellectual engagement, contributing to broader discussions on the role of symbolic language in music and cultural narratives.
