We'll Carry On: The Exploration of Figurative Language in My Chemical Romance's The Black Parade

Language is a communication tool that conveys both literal information and deep meaning through figurative language. In the world of music, especially in song lyrics, figurative language is an effective way to convey the implicit meaning of the feelings expressed by the songwriters. Songwriters often use figurative language to let emotions come across in a way that feels closer to the listeners. Through figurative language, a song can speak about things like grief, love, hope, or even rebellion, in a way that feels more alive. This research aims to explore the types of figurative language and the meanings contained in song lyrics from My Chemical Romance's The Black Parade album. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method with an approach through the figurative language theories of Leech (1981) and Knickerbocker & Reninger (1963) to identify the types of figures of speech, and to understand the actual meaning behind the song lyrics. The results showed that there were 78 findings of figurative language which were mostly found in the use of metaphor (19%), symbolism (18%), and hyperbole (18%). These figurative languages show how the band tells stories about life, death, identity, and emotional struggles. Each lyric can be seen as a little reflection of pain, strength, or even hope, all wrapped in creative expression. Therefore, this research proves that figurative language analysis in song lyrics not only serve as an artistic style to the lyrics, but also as a bridge to know the meaning that is really contained in a song lyric.
